What is Division of Labour?
When a particular work is divided into several parts and the worker is asked to work on a small part according to their ability and aptitude then that process is called division of labour. Division of labour is also known as specialisation.
Division of labour examples – in a large scale readymade garment factory, a man does cutting of cloth, the second man stitches clothes with machines, the third buttons, the fourth makes folding and packing, etc.
What are the different Types of division of labour?
The division of labour has been divided into different forms by the economists or the types of Division of Labour which can be explained as follows –
• Simple Division of Labour – When the production is split (divide) up into different parts and many workers come together to complete the work, but the contribution of each worker can not be known, it is called simple division of labour.
Or
Division of labour on the basis of occupations is known as simple division of labour. As for example – Doctor, teacher and traders, etc.
• Complex Division of Labour – When the production is split up into different parts and each part is performed by different workers who have specialised in it, it is called complex division of labour.
• Occupational Division of Labour – When the production of a commodity becomes the occupation of the worker, it is called occupational division of labour.
• Geographical or Territorial Division of Labour – This is also known as ‘localization of industries’. Under this when a particular place or region is specialized in a particular industry or in the production of a particular commodity, it is called territorial or geographical division of labour.
• International Division of Labour – When different countries produce things of their specialization we call it as international division of labour.
Advantages of Division of Labour
- Each worker specialises in a particular type of work, therefore, productivity of worker increases.
- Since each worker performs the same work again and again, therefore, productivity of worker increases.
- It results in greater production.
- It becomes possible to do work quickly and efficiently without putting much strain on workers and industry.
- Division of labour at international level of has made international trade possible.
Disadvantages of Division of Labour
- Since a worker is required to do the same work again and again, hence he becomes bore.
- It divides the responsibility for which there are more chances of shifting.
- It hinders the mobility of labour.
- If operations is one department are stopped then whole of the industry suffers.
